Hello you!

Cool that you have visited our website. We are a group of researchers from the University of Zürich who would like to find out to what extent children and young people have been infected by the corona virus. We want to know whether it’s possible for you to infect other children and young people and if they can infect you. Moreover, we want to find out whether you can infect your parents, grandparents or teachers or vice versa.

In order to test this, we carry out voluntary corona antibody tests at various Zurich schools with around 2,500 pupils. We ask you to take part in these tests so that this way, we can find out whether you have had the corona virus. If you decide to participate, we thank you and your parents in advance.

CIAO CORONA

So far, there is little information available on how many children and adolescents have been infected with the corona virus and how many are immune to the corona virus. We also do not know whether you, as can transmit the corona virus to others.

Fortunately, children and teenagers rarely fall seriously ill with the corona virus. It is likely that they are often infected without any signs of illness (symptoms). However, children and teenagers may still infect adults, who then react more strongly to the virus and become seriously ill. In order to protect ourselves and others, we all currently have to wear a mask on public transport, wash our hands regularly with soap and keep our distance wherever possible.

This is how infection with the virus happens

When someone is infected with the corona virus, the virus spreads through the nose, throat and lungs. In order to defend itself against the virus, the body produces so-called antibodies, which can be found in the blood and perhaps also in the saliva. Normally, the body produces so many antibodies that it can kill a virus. This way you are so-called "immune" and cannot get a new infection.

With the new corona virus, however, we do not yet know whether these antibodies will survive for a long time or whether they will die off again quickly. If they die off quickly, you can unfortunately suffer another infection with corona virus and then the cycle may start all over again.

This is how we find out if and how long you are immune to a corona infection

With our antibody tests that we have done on as many pupils in as many schools as possible, we can estimate how many pupils have already been infected with the corona virus. In order to know whether pupils will also be infected during the next few months, we need to repeat the tests in autumn 2020 and spring 2021.

Since the antibodies can only be detected with 100% certainty from blood, we need to take some blood from you and your colleagues. It is possible that we can also find the antibodies in your saliva. To check this, you have to spit twice into a tube. Finally, we ask you and your parents to fill out a questionnaire so that we can find out whether you had any signs of illness, for example, and how your family protected themselves against the corona virus.

At the end of the questionnaire we will ask you a few questions. We would like to know how you are doing right now and how you felt during the time that the school was closed.

TEST PROCEDURE - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Why your school?

For this study, we are inviting about 2,500 students who attend school in the canton of Zurich. Your school and your class were chosen randomly.

How does the corona antibody test work?

If you decide to participate, your parents should also agree and fill out a consent form. We will then invite you to participate in our tests at three different school periods: in June 2020, in October/November 2020 and in February/March 2021. The tests will always take place in the gym at your school. Here’s what you have to do:

virus03.png
  1. First, you spit twice into a tube.

  2. Then we take some blood from you. If you wish, you can get a plaster with an ointment that makes your skin numb on it so that the stick doesn’t hurt.

  3. You and your parents will fill out a questionnaire at home. We can also do this on the day of the test, together with you and your parents if you prefer.

The test is completely safe for you. Your parents can also be present during the blood collection. If this is not possible, please contact us by email or hotline.

In the video you can see how the whole thing works. You can watch a film with girls or with boys.

Do you have to take part?

No one's forcing you to take part. It's all voluntary. That means that you only join if you and your parents agree. If you change your mind and suddenly don't want to take part anymore, that’s not a problem - you don't have to justify this and there won’t be any negative consequences for you.

What is the benefit of participating in the study?

You help us researchers at the University of Zurich to find out important information about the corona virus. As a thank you, you will receive a small gift after each participation (for a total of three times).

Who can you contact if you have any questions?

The best way to ask your questions is to phone or email the study director, she will be happy to answer your questions:

FAQ - FREQUENTly asked QUESTIONS

TEST RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION

What is tested for?

We only test for antibodies, i.e. signs that your child has already been through an infection with the corona virus. We can detect antibodies 5-7 days after infection or even later, depending on the antibodies you are looking for. We do not test for whether the child is currently infected with the corona virus.

The antibody test of my child is positive, what does this result mean?

If there are antibodies against the novel corona virus (SARS-CoV-2) in the blood, this means that an infection with the virus has taken place. It should be noted that, given the low rate of the virus spread in Switzerland, a small number of positive tests may erroneously be positive, as there may be cross-reactions with other viruses. Further information can be found here.

The antibody test of my child was positive, is my child still contagious?

The antibodies are usually present the blood 5-7 days after the start of infection. Since we already carried out the test on your child a few weeks ago, the probability that your child is still infectious at the moment is very low. Therefore, based on the antibody test result, no self-isolation of your child is necessary.

Is my child now protected against re-infection with the corona virus?

It is not yet clear if, or for how long, your child is protected against a new infection with the corona virus by the antibodies in the blood. According to current knowledge, it seems likely that at least a temporary immunity is present, but precise research results are not yet available on this. The possibility of renewed infection with the coronavirus is therefore not excluded. It is therefore important to continue to follow the current recommendations of the Federal Office of Public Health.

The antibody test of my child is negative, what does this result mean?

Unfortunately, a negative test result does not protect anyone from future infection. Please continue to protect yourself and your family from infection.

COMMUNICATION OF THE RESULTS

When will I know the test result of my child?

Usually the laboratory delivers the test results within a few days. We make every effort to communicate the test results to you as soon as possible. Please understand that this process can take some time.

How will I be informed about my child's test result?

In case of a negative test result (no antibodies against SARS-CoV-19) you will receive an email from us. In case of a positive test result we will contact you by phone. Please note that we rely on the contact details that you provide in the online questionnaire to communicate the test results. It is not possible to communicate the test result without your data from the questionnaire. Please contact us if you no longer have a code to complete the online questionnaire. We will gladly send you a new code.

Will the test result be communicated after each planned test round?

Yes, you will receive this information at every test date.

FURTHER TESTING

When will you be tested as parents?

Parents can be tested free of charge at their child's school after the 2020 summer holidays. They will receive more detailed information from us by the end of the summer holidays. However, this is only possible if you have completed the online questionnaire. Please contact us if you no longer have a code to complete the online questionnaire. We will gladly send you a new code.

When will the school staff be tested?

School staff can be tested free of charge at school after the 2020 summer holidays and during the course of the study. The school management will inform the staff accordingly before the end of the summer holidays.

Can other family members or acquaintances also be tested in this context?

The free tests are limited to the parents of the participating child(ren). Unfortunately, testing other family members would exceed our resources. Exceptions are made for legal representatives of the children who are not the parents but live in the same household as the child.

Can children be tested whose class has not been selected?

Unfortunately we cannot accept additional children. The schools and classes were chosen randomly, therefore, for scientific reasons we cannot accept additional individual children from different classes.

QUESTIONNAIRE

I would like to fill out the online questionnaire, where can I find it?

Instruction and access data for filling out the online questionnaire are included in the documents together with the information for parents. If you have not received such instructions, please contact us by e-mail () or call the hotline  or .

Why are there personal questions in the online questionnaire that have nothing to do with the coronavirus (e.g. How long does a child play on the computer?)

Some researchers in Switzerland are interested in findings on the effects of the unique corona period because of its drastic measures on lifestyle and quality of life. The Ciao Corona study is part of the Swiss-wide Corona Immunitas Program and our team is cooperating with all researchers involved. These questions are therefore being integrated into various studies throughout Switzerland.

TEST PROGRESS

How much blood is taken from my child?

We take one tube of blood per study visit. That's 9 cc's, a little less than a tablespoon. Your child has a total of at least 3-4 liters of blood.

Can I be present during the blood withdrawal?

Yes, one parent can be present during the blood collection to support the child. It is best to contact your child's school to find out what time your child's test is scheduled for.

What are the hygiene measures for the test?

The study staff pays the greatest attention to hygiene on site: all staff wear protective masks for the mouth and nose; the blood collection staff and staff who collect sputum wear gloves. The gloves are of course always changed. The children and all staff repeatedly disinfect their hands during the individual tests.

Do the children miss important teaching time by participating in the study?

We make every effort to disrupt the lessons as little as possible and to adapt to the school's requirements as best we can. The tests themselves do not take long (20 minutes per child), so there is little overall disruption to the lessons.

How does my child benefit from participation?

It can be an important experience to participate as a child in a large university study. By dealing with the content of the study, children will learn important things about the coronavirus. In addition, the child can be proud to have made a contribution to science. Last but not least, the child’s greatest achievement probably lies in having completed the blood withdrawal.

Profile of Ciao Corona Acute Testing from December 1 to 10, 2020

How many students and class teachers who have no or few symptoms carry the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)? Researchers at the University of Zurich want to answer this question with acute testing.

Why do we test?

We do not know,

  • how strongly students and classroom teachers are affected by the second wave of the corona pandemic,

  • to what extent they are carriers of the virus among themselves,

  • whether the rapid test and the PCR test are identical in asymptomatic students, i.e. whether they arrive at the same result

How is testing done?

Examination of saliva twice (no blood sample) at school at 7-day intervals. Duration: 15 minutes

What happens?

Direct virus detection with PCR and rapid test (Roche).

In case of a positive test result (components of the virus present in the saliva), the result of the rapid test (Roche) is directly communicated to the parents, class teachers and the school management.

A positive test result in the rapid test results in isolation of the test subject. The school management will initiate the necessary steps of the contact tracing.

All students receive a small gift.

Where and who is tested?

In 13 of 25 schools in the canton of Zurich that participated in the Ciao-Corona study. All contacted students and teachers with additional electronic consent.

For detailed information for parents, children and teacher on acute testing and procedure please click here

Good to know

This study is supported by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health FOPH and the elementary school authority of the Canton of Zurich and has been approved by the Cantonal Ethics Committee and the Legal Service of the City of Zurich.

We are very pleased about a lively participation. All test persons make a great contribution to the population in Switzerland and the Swiss schools.
